Chapter 15

Harper

We both screamed, a natural reaction to what had just happened.

“Is she… Is she dead?” I managed to choke out the words, although I was pretty sure I already knew the answer.

Lexie edged closer, her eyes wide with horror. “Her neck is definitely broken.”

Panic surged through me, my pulse racing in my veins. To make matters worse, I noticed that blood had splattered onto both Lexie and me when she fell.

“We need to call the police,” I said, my voice shaking.

Lexie was already pulling out her phone when the lab door swung open. Victoria, Charlotte, Olivia, and Beth stormed in, their faces painted with various shades of curiosity and concern. That lasted all of a second before they saw Amy. Their screams added another layer of horror to the already nightmarish scene.

“What happened?” Olivia demanded, her eyes darting from Lexie to me.

“Is that Amy?” Victoria choked out, her hand flying to her mouth.

Charlotte, upon seeing the body, let out a soft cry and fainted. Victoria rushed to her side, leaving Beth standing there, paralyzed with shock.

“I’m calling the police,” Beth finally said.

My mind went immediately to Justin. He would be here tonight.

“Don’t touch anything,” I cautioned the women as I moved towards the door, eager to find him. But Olivia stepped in front of me, blocking my path. She grabbed my arm, her grip much stronger than I thought it would be.

“Did you do this?” she accused, her eyes filled with tears and accusation. “Did you kill Amy?”

I was stunned, disbelieving. “Of course not!”

Olivia’s fingers tightened around my arm; she wasn’t letting go.

“Get off!”

The commotion drew even more attention. Several people had now congregated in the hallway, and the moment they caught sight of my blood-splattered dress, more screams erupted. Olivia suddenly shoved me hard, and I lost my footing, crashing into a locker with a painful thud.

Justin appeared, pushing his way through the crowd. “What the hell is going on here?”

“She killed her! She killed Amy!” Olivia’s words erupted in a sobbing outburst, her fingers pointing accusingly at me. “She threatened to kill Amy the other day, and now look, Amy is dead!”

“I didn’t do it,” I protested, turning to Justin. “Lexie and I found her hanging in the science lab. We didn’t touch anything.”

“But you’re covered in Amy’s blood!” Olivia wailed, her face flushed and contorted in grief and accusation.

Justin moved closer, his nostrils flaring slightly.

“That’s not blood,” he said quietly but firmly. “It’s corn syrup. I can smell it.” He took out his phone and immediately began calling it in. “We need backup at the high school reunion. Possible homicide. Get everyone here. Now.”

Within ten minutes, the school was crawling with police. Lexie and I were taken to a separate classroom along with the other women. Werewolf officers confirmed after a quick examination that neither Lexie nor I had any of Amy’s blood on us.

“See? I told you I didn’t do it!” I exclaimed, but Olivia wasn’t ready to let go.

“You killed her!” she wailed, inconsolable. Maybe I needed to work on my empathy skills, because I wanted to smack her.
